Oven Roasted Apple Butter

Apple butter is taken to another level when you slow roast it in the oven. The apple flavor condenses and you get a hint of a caramelized flavor for the most amazing and deeply apple-y apple butter!

Apple butter has become a popular topping on various foods, but this is not your typical apple butter. It is taken to another level when slow roasted in the oven. To highlight the apple flavor, this apple butter is slightly spiced so you will receive that flavor without being overwhelmed with spices. This recipe makes about 2 1/2 cups so you will have plenty for yourself and some to share.

Prep Time: 15 Minutes
Cook Time: 45 Minutes
Yield: 2.5 Cups
Difficulty: Easy

INGREDIENTS

  • 3 lbs sweet apples (such as Gala), cored and quartered
  • 2 Cup apple cider (or juice)
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp ground allspice
  • 1/8 tsp ground nutmeg

DIRECTIONS

  1. Preheat the oven to 450°F. Arrange the apples in your roasting pan and pour over the apple cider.
  2. Roast for 45 minutes or until the apples are very soft. Reduce the oven temperature to 375°F. Remove the pan from the oven.
  3. Puree the apple mixture in a food processor until smooth and then return it to the roasting pan. Stir in the spices and spread it evenly in the roasting pan.
  4. Return the pan to the oven and let it roast for another approximately 1.5 hours, stirring every 15 minutes. You want it to be thickened and browned.
  5. Let cool slightly and then transfer to your jars/freezer containers to finish cooling. Use within a couple of weeks if left in the refrigerator.
